Her father, Stan Gershon is a businessman, and her mother, Mickey Gershon- Koppel is an interior designer. They are of Hebrew-Jewish ancestry.

Gina Gershon attended Woodland Hills Academy in Woodland Hills for her primary education. Prior to that, she attended Collier Street Elementary School.

In 1980, she graduated from Beverly Hills High School in California. After graduation, she attended Emerson College in Boston. Later, she was transferred to New York University in New York City. In 1983, she graduated from the University with Honors in drama and psychology/philosophy.
